Yngve Torgny Brilioth (born July 12, 1891 in the parish Västra Ed, parish Västervik , † April 27, 1959 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian .

Life

Brilioth studied at Uppsala University and received his doctorate in philosophy in 1916 . From 1914 to 1918 he worked as a secretary to Archbishop Nathan Söderblom . After ordination in 1918, he became a lecturer in church history at Uppsala University in 1919 , and professor at the Swedish-speaking Åbo Akademi in Turku in 1925 . Three years later, Lund University appointed him professor of practical theology and provost of the cathedral . He became bishop in Växjö in 1938. In 1950 he became archbishop of Uppsala and served as the highest representative of the Church of Sweden until his retirement in 1958 .

As a church historian, Brilioth dealt primarily with the history of the Middle Ages and the high church Oxford movement . He later wrote monographs on the history of sacrament piety and preaching . He has also been involved in the ecumenical movement for Faith and Order since its inception and became chairman of the movement in 1947, which was integrated into the World Council of Churches (WCC) as the Faith and Order Commission in 1948 (until 1956).

Memberships and honors

Brilioth was a member of several scientific societies, including the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences , the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala and the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies . The University of Uppsala (1927), the University of Oxford (1933), the Åbo Akademi (1934), and the University of Glasgow (1935) awarded him honorary doctorates . In 1955 he was appointed commander with the Grand Cross of the North Star Order , and in 1956 he received the Order of Seraphine .

family

Brilioth was a son of pastor Herman Brilioth. One of his brothers was the journalist Börje Brilioth (1884–1968). Since 1919 he was married to Brita Söderblom (1896–1989), a daughter of his predecessor Nathan Söderblom. His children include the diplomat Lars-Olof Brilioth (1926–2015) and the opera singer Helge Brilioth .
