Sam. Stadener

Nils Samuel ("Sam." Or "Sam") Stadener (born March 30, 1872 in Asarum (today part of Karlshamn , Blekinge län ) as Nils Samuel Svensson ; † August 6, 1937 in Malmö ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian and politician . Among other things, he worked as bishop of the dioceses of Strängnäs and Växjö and as minister of the church.

Life

Stadener was a son of the elementary school teacher Nils Svensson. After graduating from high school in Lund in 1889 , he studied at Lund University and took the theological candidate exam in 1898. He worked first as a school inspector and after his ordination in 1900 as an assistant pastor in the Swedish parish in Paris (as the successor to Nathan Söderblom ) and as a Swedish seaman's pastor in Calais and Boulogne-sur-Mer . From 1905 to 1909 he was pastor in Malmö, then in Ystad until 1923 . In both cities he was also a member of the city council ( stadsfullmäktige ). He also performed various higher-level tasks in the Lund diocese . From 1912 to 1917 he was a representative of the Liberala samlingspartiet in the first chamber of the Swedish Reichstag . Here he campaigned unsuccessfully for reforms in the Swedish state church and the independence of the free churches (whose members still formally belonged to the state church). In 1923 he took over a pastorate in the districts of Nöbbelöv and Väster in Lund. There, too, he was elected to the city council in 1927.

In October 1927, Stadener, who had stood on nominations twice since 1925, was elected Bishop of Strängnäs and took office on November 1, 1928. When Carl Gustaf Ekman formed a government made up of liberals and social democrats on June 6, 1930 , Stadener was appointed minister of the church. Among other things, he pushed through a reform of pastors' salaries, which led to the decentralization of the church's land ownership. Furthermore, after the death of Nathan Söderblom, whose successor he himself had hoped, he appointed Erling Eidem , who was only third in the elections , as archbishop in December 1931. The ministerial office ended with the election to the Swedish Parliament in September 1932 and the formation of a government led by Social Democrats. Stadener returned to his bishopric in Strängnäs, but was appointed Bishop of Växjö in December and took office on March 1, 1933. He held the office until his death.

The term of office in Växjö was overshadowed by conflicts over the relationship with the Evangelical Church in Germany. In contrast to public opinion and the majority of his office colleagues, Stadener held on to his pro-German stance even after Hitler's " seizure of power " and the subsequent conformity of the churches. He defended the actions of the German Christians and was the only one to oppose a joint decision by the Scandinavian bishops to boycott the inauguration of Reich Bishop Ludwig Müller in September 1934. Only an intervention by the Swedish government prevented his participation.

In addition to his church and political offices, Stadener held a number of honorary offices. From 1926 to 1928 he was deputy chairman and then until 1930 and again from 1933 to 1936 chairman of the Swedish Pastors' Association ( Allmänna svenska prästföreningen ), from 1929 chairman of the Swedish committee of the Lutheran World Convention and from 1930 deputy chairman of the Protestant World Association .

Stadener was married to Hedvig (Hedda) Maria af Klinteberg (1869-1936) since 1900. His son Nils was a teacher and the husband of Ingegerd Stadener (1903-1968), a novelist who also became known as a crime writer under the pseudonym Helena Poloni .
