Helge Brilioth (born May 7, 1931 in Växjö , Sweden , † December 26, 1998 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

He was the son of the Swedish Archbishop Yngve Brilioth and studied at the Royal Conservatory of Stockholm with Arne Sunnegård and at the same time sang in church choirs in the Swedish capital. His education was completed at the Salzburg Mozarteum and at the Academia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In 1959 he made his baritone debut at the Stockholm Court Opera . 1962–1964 he was engaged as a baritone at the Bielefeld Theater . He soon realized that his voice was suitable for hero tenor roles and sang the title hero for the first time in Verdi's Otello in 1965 .

Since 1969 he took part in the Bayreuth Festival , first as Siegmund (1969–1971) in Wagner's Die Walküre , in 1974 and 1975 as Tristan . In 1970 he sang at the Salzburg Easter Festival the Siegfried under Herbert von Karajan . In 1970 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Parsifal . In 1974 he sang Siegmund, Siegfried, Tristan, Aegisth in Elektra by Richard Strauss and Florestan in Beethoven's Fidelio .

Starting in 1970, guest appearances have taken him to all the major opera houses in Europe, above all to Vienna, Munich, Milan, London, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo, Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, ​​Budapest, Warsaw and Rome. He sang at the Wiesbaden, Orange, Glyndebourne and Drottningholm Festivals . He was also a well-respected concert singer and gave recitals in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Paris and New York.
