Gunnar Axel Engelbrekt Hultgren (born February 19, 1902 in Eskilstuna , † February 13, 1991 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish Evangelical Lutheran theologian and clergyman. From 1958 to 1967 he was Archbishop of Uppsala .

Life

Hultgren studied at Uppsala University from 1920 and obtained the title of teol in 1925 . kand. In the same year he was ordained and held various positions in the diocese of Strängnäs . In 1930 he took over a pastor's position in Viksta ( Uppsala parish ) and in 1934 moved to the nearby Björklinge . In addition to the parochial activities he acquired in 1933 the theological licentiate and in 1940 due to a thesis on Augustine ( Det Evangeliska kärleksbudet hos Augustine, Dess filosofiska och teologiska tolkning i hans skrifter 386-400 ) for Dr. theol. doctorate and appointed lecturer for systematic theology in Uppsala. The very next year he became a dean in the diocese of Härnösand . From 1947 to 1951 he was bishop in the Diocese of Visby and then returned to Härnösand as bishop. Appointed Archbishop of Uppsala in 1958, he served as the highest representative of the Church of Sweden until his retirement in 1967 .

Hultgren was a member of the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala (since 1967) and of the Skytteanska samfundet (since 1957).

Awards

Hultgren received the North Star Order in 1959 (as a commander with a Grand Cross). In 1964 he was accepted as a knight and commander in the Royal Order of Seraphines . He also received the Finnish Order of the White Rose .

family

Hultgren was a son of the teacher Axel Gustav Hultgren and his wife Maria Kristina Andersson.

In 1930 he married Astrid Maria Eklund (1902-1958), a daughter of Bishop Johan Alfred Eklund .
