Leendert van der Meulen
Leendert "Leen" van der Meulen (born November 22, 1937 in Badhoevedorp , today in Haarlemmermeer ; † September 2, 2015 in Voorhout ) was a Dutch cyclist and permanent world champion.
At the beginning of his career, Leen van der Meulen took part in road races, in 1958 he finished second in the Ronde van Zuid-Holland . During the Olympia's Tour he fell badly and suffered a fractured skull base. Then he decided to only drive track races. In 1961, Leen van der Meulen immediately became the amateur world champion of the stayers in Zurich, behind pacemaker Bruno Walrave . In 1960 he won the national title in this discipline, in 1962 he was second. After winning the World Cup in 1961, van der Meulen went over to the pros, but ended his cycling career after another season.
In 1979, Leen van der Meulen started working as a project developer, built a company that was sold in 1979 and emigrated to Canada. There he set up new company projects, but also launched cycling events such as “Bike for your life”. Van der Meulen later lived in the Netherlands again.
