Émile Cornez

Émile Cornez (born March 5, 1900 in Dour , † July 24, 1967 in Soignies-Casteau ) was a Belgian politician and long-time governor of the Walloon province of Hainaut .

biography

Cornez was appointed governor of the province of Hainaut in 1944 and held this office until 1967. As such, he was instrumental in the structural reform of the province, which was necessary due to the closure of numerous hard coal mines .

In 1948 he also became chairman of the Walloon Economic Council, an organization created on the initiative of the Walloon Movement to study and solve economic problems in Wallonia. In this capacity he advocated federalism , but resigned in 1962 as chairman of the economic council for health reasons. Because of his great commitment, especially in economic policy issues, he enjoyed a great reputation.

For his services Émile Cornez was honored on July 12, 1966 with the honorary title of Minister of State .

The Prix ​​de la Fondation Émile Cornez of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy at the University of Mons-Hainaut is also named in his honor.
