Adolf Friedrich Harper (born October 17, 1725 in Berlin ; † June 23, 1806 there ) was a German landscape painter .

Life

Adolf Friedrich Harper was the son and student of the Prussian cabinet painter Johann Harper (* in Stockholm ; † 1746 in Potsdam ). After the death of his father he visited France and Italy , where he had Richard Wilson's help and made studies from nature. In 1756 he came into the service of the ducal Württemberg: first employed in the residential building industry, he was appointed court painter in 1759 and in 1761 professor at the Académie des Arts , established by Duke Carl Eugen von Württemberg in that year , which was later combined with the high Charles School . In 1784 he was appointed gallery director. From 1798 onwards, after being retired, he spent the last years of his life in his native Berlin.

Act

Like Reinhard Ferdinand Heinrich Fischer , Nicolas Guibal and the other young men sponsored by Duke Carl Eugen, he had numerous assignments to fulfill and fell short of what he could have achieved. Harper, whom Goethe called a “born landscape painter”, had to paint not only his landscapes, but also flower and fruit pieces, overhangs , theater and other decorations, and he also had to support Prime Minister Peintre Nicolas Guibal in painting the air, flowers, etc. with his ceiling paintings . This gave his artistic practice, as he later felt and openly lamented, something mechanically conventional and, in particular, his color something hard. But his landscapes, which are still extensively preserved in the Württemberg castles, show a great wealth of motifs, pleasing composition and a color technique that is still instructive due to the security of its simple means, especially in the treatment of the air and the background. You can see that in Rome he drew on the best sources of tradition. As a teacher at Duke Carl Eugen's art institutes, Harper took his fair share, alongside Guibal, in training the many capable artists that emerged from it.
