Johann Harper

Johann Harper (born August 1688 in Stockholm , † December 4, 1746 in Potsdam ) was a Swedish painter.

Act

Harper was the son of the businessman Jakob Harper and his wife Anna (nee Pohl). He learned painting from Paul Heinecken , Peter Martin van Mytens and David von Krafft . In 1709 he took a trip to Germany and trained with Ismael Mengs, who emigrated to Lübeck, to become an excellent miniature and enamel painter.

He specialized in oil paintings and especially miniature painting . From 1712 he worked in Berlin , where he was appointed Prussian court cabinet painter in 1716. Harper also created ceiling paintings for Sanssouci .

His son, Adolf Friedrich Harper (1725–1806), learned miniature and flower painting from his father and became a landscape painter .

His students included Johann Gottlieb Glume (1711–1778) and Joachim Martin Falbe .
