Matthew Gibson (born September 2, 1996 in Lymm ) is a British cyclist who is active on track and road .

Athletic career

2013 Matthew Gibson finished with the road world championships in fifth place in the road race in the juniors. In the following year he won silver in the team pursuit at the Junior European Railway Championships with Joe Holt , Joe Evans and Gabriel Cullaigh .

2015 was a very successful year for Gibson. At the U23 European Championships he won two titles, in scratch and in team pursuit (with Oliver Wood , Germain Burton and Christopher Latham ). A little later, at the age of 18, he became the youngest member of the team in the elite team pursuit championship (with Jonathan Dibben , Owain Doull , Andrew Tennant , Bradley Wiggins and Steven Burke ).

In the following period, for some unknown reason, Gibson lost his form, and he was out for the entire 2016 season. Eventually he was found to have Epstein-Barr virus , which caused him to develop Pfeiffer glandular fever . In 2017 he mainly competed in smaller bike races on the road to regain his shape.

In 2018, Matthew Gibson achieved several stage successes in international races, such as the New Zealand Cycle Classic , the Tour de Normandie , the Tour du Loir-et-Cher and the Tour de l'Avenir .
