The first stage of the Tour of Austria 2006 with start and finish in Gars am Kamp had a length of 146 km. After about 25 kilometers, the Swiss Florian Stalder pulled away from the field and was only caught again shortly before the last mountain classification.
The main field reached the finish line and the decision was made in the mass sprint. The Italian Danilo Napolitano won the stage ahead of his compatriot Fabrizio Guidi and the Austrian Werner Riebenbauer .

The second stage led over 188 km from Linz to Salzburg . The numerous attempts to break away at the beginning of the race were not crowned with success. It was only on the descent after the first mountain classification that the Dutchman Remmert Wielinga, together with Fabio Baldato from Italy and the Slovakian Ján Valach, managed to break away from the field. The trio saved their lead, which was now around ten minutes, to the finish. Baldato sprinted to victory there in front of Wielinga and Valach and took the yellow jersey of the overall leader. The sprint of the main field was won by the winner of the previous day, Danilo Napolitano, 3:08 minutes behind .

The third stage started in Salzburg and ended after 196 km on the Kitzbüheler Horn . The early stages of the race were marked by numerous escape attempts. However, it was only after around 80 km that a group of 15 managed to break away from the field. Their maximum lead was around 2:30 minutes.
In the ascent to the Kitzbüheler Horn, where almost 1000 meters of altitude had to be overcome, the last riders of the breakaway group were caught and the American Tom Danielson managed to break away from the field. About 2000 m before the finish he was caught by the Austrian Christian Pfannberger , who won the stage ahead of Danielson and his compatriot Gerhard Trampusch . With this success, Pfannberger also secured the lead in the overall ranking.

The fourth stage started in Kitzbühel , followed the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and ended after 182 km in Prägraten . At the beginning of the race, numerous drivers tried to break away from the field. However , they were caught up again at the latest on the climb to the Grossglockner , which the Austrian Bernhard Kohl was the first to master.
In the descent from the Hochtor , the Italian Vincenzo Nibali was able to break away from the leading group around the overall leader Christian Pfannberger . His lead of at times over five minutes was not enough to win the stage; shortly before the finish he was put by the Belgian Pieter Ghyllebert , who could win this royal stage, and the Ukrainian Ruslan Pidhornyj .

The fifth stage led from Wolfsberg over 170 km to Graz . At this stage, too, none of the drivers were able to break away from the field significantly in the early stages of the race. Only when climbing onto the pack did a group manage to break away and gain a maximum lead of around two minutes.
After the peloton was able to catch up with the breakaway group six kilometers from the finish, the Italian Danilo Napolitano decided the sprint for himself as on the first stage. The Australian Graeme Brown and the American Guido Trenti finished this part of the day in second and third place . Christian Pfannberger defended his lead in the overall standings.

The sixth stage was a 31 km long individual time trial around Podersdorf am See . The Hungarian László Bodrogi , 38th in the overall standings before this stage, clearly showed the other riders their limits and won clearly ahead of Vincenzo Nibali from Italy and the American Tom Danielson , who was able to secure the yellow jersey of the front runner. The previous leader Christian Pfannberger finished the stage 42nd, lost over two minutes to Danielson and fell back to third place in the overall standings.

The Tour of Austria 2006 ended with the seventh stage . On the way from Podersdorf am See to Rathausplatz in Vienna , the drivers had to cover 129 km. Around 30 km after the start, a top group of eleven drivers formed, but they were caught up again 8 km before the finish. The Italian Fabrizio Guidi won the sprint for the day's victory . He relegated the Germans Marcel Sieberg and Graeme Brown from Australia to places two and three.
The American Tom Danielson reached the finish with the main field and thus secured the overall victory of the 58th Tour of Austria .
