At the Tour de Langkawi , he won the first two stages at the beginning of the season.
He took part in the Olympic Games three times - in 1996 , 1996 and 1996 . In the team pursuit he finished 17th with his team in 1996 and 21st in the 2000 points race . In 2004 he took part in the single pursuit and the road race, but could not finish both competitions.
In 2012 he won two stages in the Vuelta a Costa Rica . After GW1516 was found in the A sample of his urine during two doping controls during this tour , he was temporarily suspended on May 3, 2013 by the Union Cycliste Internationale . In GW1516 is a drug that was originally developed to combat obesity, but was not approved because in clinical trials a high cancer risk showed. The World Anti-Doping Agency had expressly warned against the use of this preparation, to be regarded as gene doping , which is only available on the black market, due to the health hazard in spring 2013. A sanction for this violation is not known.
In 2017 Pérez started as a pilot for the visually impaired driver Nelson Serna at the Paracycling World Championships ; the duo became world champions.
