Ferdinando Ughelli (born March 19, 1596 in Florence , † May 19, 1670 in Rome ) was an Italian Cistercian and an important church historian .

Live and act

Ughelli came from a wealthy family and probably entered the Cistercian order in Florence in 1610. His studies took him to Rome, where he successfully completed them at the Collegio Romano of the Jesuits in 1623. His teachers included Francesco Piccolomini and Juan de Lugo . After his return Ughelli initially took on a management position in the Abbey of Cistello, in 1628 he became abbot of San Galgano near Siena, in 1632 of Nonantola and 1635 of San Salvatore in Settimo . In order to be able to use the Roman libraries for his research, in 1637 he took over the post of General Procurator of the Order at the Roman Curia . On the intercession of Cardinal Francesco Barberini , he was appointed Abbot of Tre Fontane (SS. Vincenzo e Anastasia ad Aquas Salvias). The exact date of his appointment as Consultor of the Congregation on the Index is not known. He always refused to take over the overall management of the Cistercian Order as Abbot General , to which he was repeatedly urged.

His main work, which can still be consulted today, is the Italia Sacra , a presentation of the history of the dioceses of the mainland part of Italy, into which numerous sources are incorporated. To do this, he made use of an extensive network of correspondents who sent him notices and copies of texts. The first edition appeared in Rome in nine volumes between 1644 and 1662. A new edition, supplemented, was published by Nicola Coleti in Venice from 1717 to 1722.

His estate with the correspondence and copies of documents and other sources that he bequeathed to Cardinal Francesco Barberini has been in the Fondo Barberini of the Vatican Library since 1902 and includes the manuscripts there with the signature Barb (erinus) lat (inus) 3204 to Barb (erinus) lat (inus) 3249. In a number of cases Ughelli's materials are the oldest surviving handwritten records.
