Gianantonio Davia (born October 23, 1660 in Bologna , † January 11, 1740 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal and archbishop .

Life

He was born in 1660 as the second son of Giovanni Battista Davia and Countess Porzia Ghislieri. He graduated from the University of Bologna in utroque iure . He then became magistrate in the city of Bologna. As a venture of the Republic of Venice , in 1684 he took part in the conquest of the island of Lefkada , which was captured by the Turks . After moving to Rome, he began an ecclesiastical career and was appointed Internuntius in Brussels in 1687 . Here he was appointed titular archbishop of Thebae . The episcopal ordination donated to him on September 10, 1690 Humbertus Guilelmus de Precipiano , Archbishop of Mechelen ; Co- consecrators were Reginaldus Cools , Bishop of Roermond , and Joannes Ferdinandus Van Beughem , Bishop of Antwerp .

After that he was appointed as Apostolic Nuncio to Cologne (1690), to Poland (1696) and Austria sent (1700), from where he Kaiser 1706 I. Joseph was expelled. In 1698 he had received a personal title with his appointment as Archbishop of Rimini .

Pope Clement XI. raised him in the consistory of May 18, 1712 to the rank of cardinal priest and on August 30, 1713 he received San Callisto as the titular church .

In 1725 he decided on the titular church of San Pietro in Vincoli and then again, at the same time as he assumed the office of cardinal proto priest , for the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina . In 1727 he became Prefect of the Index Congregation .

He died on January 11, 1740 at the age of 79, and his body was interred in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina .
