Sebastiano Antonio Tanara (born April 10, 1650 in Rome , † May 5, 1724 ibid) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Tanara studied law at the University of Bologna . From 1675 to 1687 he was the nuncio in Flanders and was assigned a mission in connection with King James II of England, who had converted to the Roman Catholic Church. In 1687 he was appointed titular archbishop of Damascus , in the same year he was ordained a priest . The episcopal ordination donated to him on July 13, 1687 in the Church of Sainte Gudule in Brussels Alphonse de Berghe , archbishop of Mechelen ; Co- consecrators were Jean van Beughem , Bishop of Antwerp , and Pierre Van den Perre , Bishop of Namur . On December 21, 1689 Tanara was appointed Papal Assistant to the Throne . From 1687 to 1690 he was papal nuncio in Cologne , from 1690 to 1692 in Portugal and from 1692 to 1696 with the German emperor in Vienna. Pope Innocent XII. elevated him to cardinalate in December 1695 . On May 21, 1696 he received as cardinal priest Santi Quattro Coronati in Rome as titular church . Around 1696 Tanara also became abbot of the Exemten Abbey of Nonantola . The cardinal took part in the conclave of 1700 , in which Clement XI. was elected Pope. From 1703 to 1715 he was a legate in Urbino . On April 1, 1715 he was appointed bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Frascati and on March 3, 1721 cardinal bishop of Ostia . As dean of the Holy College , he presided over the conclave of 1721 , when Innocent XIII. was elected Pope.

Tanara opened on March 20, 1724 after the death of Innocent XIII. the conclave , on May 29 of the same year Benedict XIII. was to vote for Pope and led it, but had to leave it on April 15th due to an illness and died while the Sedis vacancy . He was buried in the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome.

His nephew Alessandro Tanara (1680–1754) was also appointed cardinal in 1743.
