Alessandro Tanara (born November 14, 1680 in Bologna , † April 29, 1754 in Rome ; also Alexander Tanarius or Alessandro Tanari ) was an Italian clergyman and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Origin and early years

He came from a Bolognese patrician family and was the second of four children of the Marchese Franchiotto Tanara, Senator and Gonfaloniere of Bologna, and his wife Vittoria Malvezzi. His great-uncle was Cardinal Ulderico Carpegna , his uncle was Cardinal Sebastiano Antonio Tanara .

As a youth, Alessandro Tanara was sent to Rome, where he pursued his studies under the care of his uncle Cardinal Tanara. There he met Cardinal Prospero Lambertini, who later became Pope Benedict XIV , who resided in the same building. Under the academy name Orisbo Boreatico he became a member of the Accademia dell'Arcadia .

Church career

In October 1712 Alessandro Tanara became a relator of the Congregation for the Administration of Goods and the Apostolic Visitation . In December 1714 he was appointed judge at the Courts of Justice of the Apostolic Signature . He was also vicar at the Church of Santa Maria in Via Lata . In 1715 he received a canonical at the Lateran Basilica and became vicar there in 1721. He was also secretary of the Consistorial Congregation . In September 1733 Alessandro Tanara became auditor of the Roman Rota for Bologna, in February 1734 he took his place there. His judicial decisions were later published in two volumes. On October 24, 1734 he was ordained a sub-deacon and received on October 28, 1734 diaconate . After he was appointed secretary of the Congregation Propaganda Fide on February 18, 1735 , he particularly supported the efforts of Coptic clergymen in Egypt to unite, which ultimately led to the formation of the Coptic Catholic Church united with Rome .

Cardinalate

Pope Benedict XIV accepted him in the consistory of September 9, 1743 as a cardinal deacon in the college of cardinals. Alessandro Tanara received the red hat on September 12, 1743, and on September 23 of the same year he was awarded Santa Maria in Aquiro as a titular diaconia. He was a member of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars , the Council Congregation , the Congregation for the Administration of Goods and the Congregation of Rites .

Alessandro Tanara died on April 29, 1754 at around 2 p.m. in Rome. His body was laid out in the Roman church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva , where the exequies also took place. He was buried in the chapel of St. Maria Magdalena in this very church.
