The Congregation for the Clergy ( Latin : Congregatio pro Clericis ) is a central authority of the Vatican (Curia authority).

Names and history

The current congregation for the clergy has its origin in the congregation for the interpretation and observance of the Council of Trent established by Pope Pius IV on August 2, 1564 with the constitution Alias ​​Nos (Congregatio pro executione et interpretatione Concilii Tridentini). Even after the interpretation of the Council canons continued to decline and in the course of time other tasks had been added which replaced the original task, the Congregation kept the name Holy Council Congregation . Department for the Clergy

This department was concerned with promoting the religious education of all believers. To this end, she supervised the correct formation of catechists and approved the national catechisms and directories. This also included assistance in specific situations. Since February 2013, through the Motu Proprio Fides per Doctrinam , the Pope has completely transferred this responsibility to the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization .

Education

The old "study" was in 1919 by Pope Benedict XV. built. This facility is intended to give young priests knowledge of the handling of church affairs, the application of canonical laws and administration.

Institute and magazine "Sacrum Ministry"

This institute was assigned to the Congregation in 1994/95. It is responsible for the formation of those responsible and for the continuous formation of the priests . The magazine of the same name is intended to be of help to ordinaries , priests, clergy and educational institutions in the pastoral service. At the same time, it serves for further training in the field of catechesis.

International Council for Catechesis

The International Council for Catechesis was founded as a result of the Second Vatican Council in 1976 by Paul VI. who had promoted the Catechism of the Catholic Church during his tenure . The dicastery serves to exchange experiences, it works on important catechetical topics for the Holy See and the bishops' conferences and offers suggestions and suggestions. Through the Motu Proprio Fides per Doctrinam , this council as well as the catechesis department were separated from the congregation and incorporated into the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization.
