Giacomo Cattani

Giacomo Cattani (born January 13, 1823 in Brisighella , Province of Ravenna , Italy , † February 14, 1887 in Ravenna ) was a Vatican diplomat, cardinal and archbishop of Ravenna .

Life

Giacomo Cattani, son of a noble family, studied theology, philosophy and diplomacy in Faenza and Rome. He was ordained a priest on September 20, 1845 and continued his studies in Rome. In 1852 he became canon of the Lateran basilica and papal house prelate. In 1866 he became Intenuntius in the Netherlands.

Pope Pius IX appointed Cattani in March 1868 apostolic nuncio in Belgium and titular archbishop of Ancyra . He was ordained bishop on July 12th of the same year by Cardinal Costantino Patrizi Naro , secretary of the Holy Office . Co-consecrators were Pietro de Villanova Castellacci and Antonio Rossi Vaccari . In April 1875, Cattani returned to Rome and became secretary of the Council Congregation . In 1877 Pius IX appointed him. to the Apostolic Nuncio in Spain.

Pope Leo XIII. elevated him to cardinal dignity on September 19, 1879 and appointed him cardinal priest of Santa Balbina in 1880 . Since September 22, 1879 he was also Archbishop of Ravenna. Cardinal Cattani did not return to Rome until November 1879 to personally receive the appointments from the Pope. In 1881 and 1884 he traveled to his archdiocese for pastoral purposes. In 1887 he died after a long and serious illness and was buried in the main cemetery in Ravenna.
