Robert Francis Prevost OSA (born September 14, 1955 in Chicago ) is an American religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Chiclayo in Peru .

Life

Robert Francis Prevost studied mathematics and philosophy at Villanova University in Villanova near Philadelphia . After the exams in both subjects in 1977, he joined the Augustinian order and made perpetual profession on August 29, 1981 . He received on 19 June 1982, the sacrament of Holy Orders . In 1985 he became a canonical dissertation of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas ( "Angelicum") to Dr. theol. PhD. From 1985 to 1987 he worked in the territorial prelature of Chulucanas in Peru, which was traditionally supervised by Augustinians . From 1988 to 1998 he worked in the Archdiocese of Trujillo , also in Peru. From 1998 to 2001 he was provincial superior of the Augustinians in Peru. From 2001 to 2013 he was Superior General of the Augustinian Order.

On November 3, 2014 it appointed Pope Francis to the titular bishop of Sufar and ordered him to the Apostolic Administrator of Chiclayo. The inauguration as administrator followed four days later. The Apostolic Nuncio in Peru, Archbishop James Patrick Green , donated him episcopal ordination on December 12 of the same year . Co- consecrators were the former bishop of Chiclayo, Jesús Moliné Labarte , and the archbishop of Ayacucho o Huamanga , Salvador Piñeiro García-Calderón . Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Chiclayo on September 26, 2015.

On July 13, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Clergy for five years .

On April 15, 2020, Francis also appointed him Apostolic Administrator of Callao .

Motto

The episcopal motto is a sermon of St. Augustine ( Enarrationes in Psalmos 127,3) taken from: "nos multi in illo uno unum": "In this one (Christ) we are many one".
