Orazio Lancellotti

Orazio Lancellotti (born December 8, 1571 in Rome , † December 9, 1620 there ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Born the eldest of seven children and the first son of Paolo Lancellotti and his wife Giulia Delfini Mancinelli, he was a nephew of Cardinal Scipione Lancellotti . He studied law at the University of Perugia. On May 31, 1596 he became a canon of the Vatican Basilica . Pope Clement VIII appointed him trainee lawyer at the courts of the Apostolic Signature . From June 26, 1596 (or 1597) to 1611, he was the successor of Lorenzo Bianchetti , who had been created cardinal, auditor of the Rota Romana . From March 24, 1597 he was auditor of the Apostolic Penitentiary , he was also auditor of the Apostolic Palace and the Apostolic Chamber. From October 14, 1609, his title was the regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary. In 1610 he had the church of San Simeone Profeta , which had been titular church until 1587, completely renovated. Orazio Lancellotti received minor orders and the ordination of deacons .

In the consistory of August 17, 1611 , Pope Paul V elevated him to cardinal. He received the cardinal's hat on August 20, 1611 and on September 12 of the same year he was appointed cardinal priest of San Salvatore in Lauro . He was Prefect of the Congregation for the Council from 1616 until his death .

He was buried in the Lateran basilica . His brother Tiberio became his sole heir, but he bequeathed 6,000 scudi to the Piarist Order, which was only founded in 1617 .

He completed the construction of Palazzo Lancellotti , which his uncle had started, and entrusted the construction work to Carlo Madero .
