Gan Kim Yong (born February 9, 1959 ) is a politician of the People's Action Party (PAP) from Singapore , who was chairman of the PAP after 2018.

Career

Gan began his civil service career in Singapore with the Department of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of the Interior. In 1989 he left the public service for the private sector and moved to NatSteel Ltd. In 1996 he was named Executive Vice President of NatSteel and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NatSteel Resorts International and NatSteel Properties . In 2005 he became President and CEO of NatSteel.

Gan Kim Yong had the first election in 2001 at Holland-Bukit Panjang GRC, where the party won a walkover. Gan Kim Yong joined Choa Chu Kang in 2006, replacing Low Seow Chay.

In 2008, Gan Kim Yong became Acting Minister of Labor, where he became Ordinary Minister in 2009. Since May 21, 2011, Gan Kim Yong has been Minister for Health. At the same time, the constituency was incorporated into the GRC called Chua Chu Kang GRC along with Low Yen Ling , Zaqy Mohamad, Alex Yam Ziming, and Alvin Yeo .

Gan Kim Yong was later appointed by the World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as the independent high-level commission on non-communicable diseases from 2018 to 2019.

On January 28, 2019, confidential information such as names, identification numbers, phone numbers, addresses, and HIV test results of 12,400 HIV-positive people were leaked online after a former health ministry official Ler Teck Siang mistreated the information. The former staff, the former head of the National Public Health Department, had access to the information and did not comply with the Ministry of Health's safety guidelines. Ler downloaded the information onto a personal USB stick that his then friend Mikhy K Farrera Brochez later leaked online. Gan also stated that the information was not disclosed earlier to ensure patient wellbeing.

Gan Kim Yong and Lawrence Wong jointly led the COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore on January 27, 2020 . The disease is also known as SARS-CoV-2 .

Gan Kim Yong was educated at Catholic High School and National Junior College before going to the University of Cambridge , where he graduated in 1981, before earning his Masters degree in 1985.
