Low Yen Ling

Low Yen Ling (born August 17, 1974 in Singapore ) is a Singaporean politician (PAP). Since October 2013 she has been Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Family Development. As a member of the People's Action Party (PAP), she is a member of the Singaporean parliament for the constituency of Chua Chu Kang Group Representation Constituency. She entered politics in 2011.

Low went to Canossa Convent Primary School, Dunman High School and later Temasek Junior College in Singapore. She graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a Bachelor of Business Studies.

Career

From 1996 to 2000, Low was employed by Keppel TatLee Bank and later by United Overseas Bank and was a business development manager for a start-up called AutoHub Pte Ltd. She then joined the Economic Development Board (EDB) in 2001 and was the director responsible for development of the professional service sector. During her tenure, she pioneered the new Singapore Welcome Center for Corporates to attract Asian companies and global medium-sized companies to Singapore.

Political career

In 2011, Low was added to the Chua Chu Kang GRC constituency list. She was officially introduced as a candidate on April 4, 2011.

Low won with her party in her constituency and received 61.2% of the vote. The National Solidarity Party only got 38.8% of the vote.

In June 2011, Low was named the third CEO of Business China, a nonprofit that was founded in November 2007 to strengthen Singapore-China bilateral ties and build a cultural and economic bridge between the world and China.

Low is an avid family supporter and also chaired the organizing committee of the National Family Reunions in 2012 and 2013. Since Low had a bad childhood, she advocates for families in parliament, especially early childhood education and support for families at risk. The Low family could not afford a home of their own and lived in rented factories. She lived with her grandmother until she was five as the factory was considered an unsafe environment for a young girl. Because of this, she only saw her parents on weekends.

In 2016, Low appeared on the Singapore television series Eat Already? where she applied for SkillsFuture on behalf of the government.

Low was promoted to Senior Parliamentary Secretary in the Department of Commerce and Industry and the Department of Education on May 1, 2017.

Private

Low's parents ran a small tailor shop. Low is married and has two sons. She is also active in sports by running and playing table tennis. Low has renewed her relationship with the sport as Vice President of the Singapore Table Tennis Association. Low is a Christian .
