Alex Yam

Alex Yam Ziming (born June 20, 1981 ) is a Singaporean politician. He has been a member of the Singapore-based People's Action Party (PAP) since 2001 and is currently a Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, in the Yew Tee Division.

He is the executive director of the People's Action Party (PAP) headquarters and adviser to the United Oil Workers of the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) in Singapore.

Yam was born on June 20, 1981 at Mount Alvernia Hospital in Singapore. As the only son of Yam Kah Heng and Lucy Yeo, he attended Maris Stella High School, which he graduated in 1993, followed by Dunman High School , which he graduated in 1997. He then studied at Victoria Junior College before earning a Masters in Politics and International Relations from the University of Kent in 2005, specializing in North Asian Politics and Communitarianism.

In 2000, Yam received the National Volunteers Award from the Life Insurance Association of Singapore (LIA) for his work as Honorary Secretary of HEARTS International . From 2005 to 2006 he worked at the National University of Singapore . Yam joined the National Trades Union Congress in 2006 and was Head of Strategies & Planning and Head of the Youth Lab. He also worked as a consultant for the Singapore Industrial & Services Employees Union .

From 2006 to 2010, Yam was secretary to then Environment Minister Lim Swee Say on the Advisory Committee for Citizens of Buona Vista and chairman of the Youth Wing after replacing Liang Eng Hwa in both roles when Liang entered politics. He later served on the Yew Tee Citizens Consultative Committee and the Yew Tee Community Club Management Committee until 2011, before replacing Yeo Cheow Tong.

Since 2009 he has been a board member of the Chinese Development Assistance Council and a candidate for the Patron of CDAC. From October 2015 he was chairman of the CDAC's outreach committee after replacing Grace Fu , who had given up her role as minister for culture, community and youth. He later chaired the newly formed Fulfilling Aging Committee from November 2015 and handed over the leadership of the Outreach Committee to Ong Ye Kung .

Previously, he was Secretary of the Young PAP General Branch and a member of the Executive Committee of Young PAP EXCO. Yam was sworn in for the first time as a member of parliament for the constituency of the Chua Chu Kang group representation on May 7, 2011 after the parliamentary elections in Singapore in 2011. In the general election in Singapore in 2015, its division was transformed from Yew Tee into the new Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC. He was re-elected as MP for the same department on September 11, 2015 with Lawrence Wong , Halimah Yacob and Ong Teng Koon. He also became executive director after party veteran Lau Ping Sum retired in early 2013.

Following the elections to the Central Executive Committee, he was appointed Deputy Organizational Secretary of the People's Party on November 23, 2018, replacing Ng Eng Hen .
