Lawrence Wong Shyun Tsai (born December 18, 1972 in Singapore ) is a Singaporean politician ( PAP ). Since the parliamentary elections in 2011 he has been represented there as a member of the People's Action Party . Since the general election in 2015 , Wong has been Minister for National Development and Singapore's second Minister of Finance.

Career

Wong began his career as a civil servant in the Department of Commerce and Industry. From 1997 to 1999, he was deputy director of the Ministry of Research and Planning and secretary of Ong Teng Cheong . Wong then moved to the Treasury Department, where he was Deputy Director of Financial Policy from 1999 to 2001 before becoming Deputy Director of Budget and Head of Economic Programs. In 2004 he moved to the Ministry of Health as Director of Healthcare Finance . From 2005 to 2008, Wong was Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as head of cabinet . In 2008, Wong was named Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Singapore Energy Market Authority.

Political career

Wong was elected to parliament in the 2011 general election to represent the constituency of the West Coast Group. On May 21, 2011, he was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Education. Wong was also appointed to the Board of Directors of the Monetary Authority of Singapore on June 10, 2011 . On August 1, 2012, Wong was appointed Supreme Minister of State for Information, Communication and the Arts, and Supreme Minister of State for Education. In the same year, on November 1, he was appointed Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Supreme Minister of State for Communication.

Wong led a team that should ensure that the Botanical Gardens of Singapore are the first UNESCO World Heritage Site . Also on May 18, 2013, he introduced free entry for all Singaporeans and permanent residents to all national museums and cultural institutions. In 2013, Wong set up a new National Youth Fund of S $ 100 million (approx. 61 million ) to support the community and social causes.

On May 1, 2014, Wong was appointed Minister of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) and Second Minister of Communication and Information. He is also a member of the Central Executive Committee. Wong was also named director of the SG50 program office, which coordinated the work of five committees for the nation's Golden Jubilee celebrations. He is also co-chair of the SG50 Committee on Culture and Community.

As MCCY minister, Wong was involved in the transformation of the Civic District, the birthplace of modern Singapore, which was home to many institutions that have seen major turning points in the history of Singapore. In August 2015, the National Arts Council expressed criticism of Wong's project. The high fees were criticized. Wong responded to the criticism in parliament, stating that the project must be carried out at a reasonable cost as a full site survey was required.

Under his responsibility, Wong also launched the S $ 200 million Cultural Matching Fund (CMF), a dollar-for-dollar grant for donating money to nonprofits and public institutions in Singapore.

In August 2015, it was reported that Wong would run in the constituency of the Marsiling-Ywe Tee Group for the 2015 general election . His party won against the Singapore Democratic Party with 69.86%.

Wong also served as chair of the steering committee for the 2015 Southeast Asian Games . Singapore's 259 medal performance was the best ever in the history of the Games. Wong had also announced several key initiatives to attract more Singaporeans to the sport. This includes a national movement called ActiveSG, which gives all Singaporeans and permanent residents S $ 100 to sign up for sports programs or to visit swimming pools and gyms at various sports centers across the island.

Wong also chairs the Singapore High Performance Sports Steering Committee, which provides strategic guidelines for identifying and promoting high-performing sports talent. He said the performance of Singapore's athletes at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games suggests Singapore's investment in the sport is paying off.

After the general election in 2015 , it was announced on September 28, 2015 that Wong would be Minister for National Development from October 1, 2015. He also chairs the Jurong Lake District Development Steering Committee. During the National Day rally on August 21, 2016, it was announced that Wong would also be appointed second Treasury Secretary. On August 29, 2016, Wong stepped down from the Singapore Monetary Authority Board of Directors and was replaced by Ong Ye Kung .

education

Wong was educated at the Haig Boys' Primary School, Tanjong Katong Secondary School and Victoria Junior College before 1993 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States a Bachelor of Science in Economics graduated. He then did a Masters of Arts in Economics from the University of Michigan and a Masters of Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School , a Harvard University .

Personal

Wong's father was a sales manager and his mother was a primary school teacher. His older brother is an aerospace engineer. Wong was initially divorced and later remarried. He is of Singaporean Hainan descent.
