Lim Swee Say (2011)

Lim Swee Say (Chinese: 林瑞生; Pinyin: Lín Ruì Shēng; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Lîm Sūi-seⁿ, born July 13, 1954 ) is a Singaporean politician. As a member of the ruling party for popular actions ( PAP ), he resigned as Minister of Labor in 2018. He was previously Environment Minister from 2001 to 2004, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office from 2004 to 2015, and Secretary General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) from 2014 to 2015 from 2005 to 2015. He has been a Member of Parliament since 1996.

Life

Lim trained at Catholic High School and National Junior College before receiving a 1973 SAF scholarship to study at Loughborough University in the UK .

In 1976 he completed his studies in electronics, computers and systems engineering with distinction.

In 1991, Lim received a master's degree in management from Stanford University .

Early career

From 1986 to 1991, Lim was the Chief Executive of the National Computer Board in Singapore and from 1994 to 1998 its Chairman. From 1991 to 1993 he was Deputy Director of the Economic Development Board in New York .

Political career

In the 1997 general election, Lim was a PAP candidate in the constituency of Tanjong Pagar (Tanjong Pagar GRC), led by the late Lee Kuan Yew (who died in 2015) and was elected in one round. He was in the 2001 general election in the PAP team in Holland-Bukit Panjang GRC and in the 2006 general election in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC and was elected unopposed on both occasions. In the 2011 general election, Lim stood on the East Coast GRC , where the PAP team defeated the opposition Labor Party team with 59,992 votes (54.8%) to 49,429 votes (45.2%).

Lim was Deputy Secretary General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) from 1997 to 1999. From 1997 to 1998 he was also a member of the Singapore Competitiveness Committee and Chairman of the Human Resources Development Sub-Committee.

In 1999, Lim was appointed Minister of State at the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts.

Lim was appointed Minister of the Environment in 2000. He became a full member of the Cabinet in 2001.

Early career In 2004, Lim was appointed Minister in the Prime Minister's Office. He was also the second minister for national development from 2004 to 2005.

In 2005, Lim became the NTUC's second deputy secretary general (while continuing to serve as the non-portfolio minister in the prime minister's office). In 2007 he was appointed Secretary General of the NTUC.

In 2014, Lim appeared on Singapore's Mediacorp Channel 8 episode "Hear Me Out" to respond to criticism against him and to speak out on a number of topics, such as his Zorro "Cheaper, Faster, Better, Better" costume. , "Deaf Frog" and why Singapore is adopting a progressive wage model instead of a minimum wage.

In 2015, Lim resigned as Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister and NTUC Secretary General (in line with the NTUC's Pension Policy) and was appointed Minister of Labor.

Lim has been a member of the Central Executive Committee of the PAP since 1999 and was chairman of the Young PAP (youth wing of the party) from 2000 to 2004 .

Lim retired from cabinet on May 1, 2018, with his manpower portfolio being followed by Josephine Teo . On May 5, Lim was awarded the Distinguished Comrade of Labor at the May Day Awards ceremony presented by former NTUC Secretary General (now Minister of Commerce and Industry) Chan Chun Sing .
