Pietro Ostini
Pietro Ostini (born April 27, 1775 in Rome , † March 4, 1849 in Naples ) was a curia cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
Pietro Ostini studied in the Roman seminary theology and received on 3 March 1798, the priestly ordination . After that he worked for a long time as a professor of church history . In addition, he exercised priestly activities and worked as a theologian for various cardinals. Under his influence, the German painter Friedrich Overbeck converted to Catholicism in 1813. From 1817 Ostini worked for several cardinal congregations of the Roman Curia , for example as consultor of the congregation De Propaganda fide . In the late stages of the papal restoration, he became one of the most influential figures in spiritual Rome. In 1823 he was supposed to be Vicar Apostolic in Chile, but because of his brother's opposition, he refused this appointment. 1827 Ostini was by Pope Leo XII. appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Switzerland and remained so until 1829.
After his appointment as titular Archbishop of Tarsus on April 9, 1827, Cardinal Giacomo Giustiniani donated him episcopal ordination on August 12 of the same year . From 1829 to 1832 he was nuncio in Brazil , then until 1836 nuncio in Austria .
Pope Gregory XVI had already created him cardinal in pectore on September 30, 1831 , but his elevation was only announced on July 11, 1836 at the same time as his appointment as bishop (with the personal title of archbishop) of Iesi . In November 1836, Ostini was appointed cardinal priest of San Clemente . On April 3, 1843 he was finally raised to Cardinal Bishop of Albano .
Pietro Ostini was one of the participants in the 1846 conclave that Pius IX. elected to the Pope. From 1847 to 1849 Cardinal Ostini held the office of Prefect of the Council Congregation and was Cardinal Protector of the Cistercian Order . He followed the Pope into exile in Gaeta in 1848 and died of the consequences of an accident in which he suffered a serious head injury. His grave is in the cathedral of Naples .
