Joël Mercier

Joël Mercier (born January 5, 1945 in Chaudefonds-sur-Layon , France ) is a French clergyman and curial archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Joël Mercier initially studied classical literature at the Sorbonne and entered the Angers seminary in 1964 . After studying at the Université Catholique de l'Ouest , he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Angers on June 27, 1970 . Pope Benedict XVI appointed him chaplain to His Holiness ( Monsignor ) in 2005 .

From 1971 to 1974 he studied canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he initially obtained a licentiate and then a Dr. jur.can. received his doctorate .

After duties in the parish and school pastoral work, he was the episcopal secretary in Angers from 1987 to 2001. At the same time he was a member of the ecclesiastical court of the Pays de Loire region and taught at the theological faculty of Angers from 1980. From January 2002 he worked for the Congregation for Bishops and from 2007 spiritual at the French seminary in Rome.

On January 8, 2015 it appointed Pope Francis to the titular pro hac vice of Rota and secretary of the Congregation for the Clergy . The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin , on March 19 the same year. Co- consecrators were the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, Marc Ouellet PSS , and the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, Beniamino Stella .
