Lars Anders Cardinal Arborelius OCD (born September 24, 1949 in Sorengo , Lugano district , Switzerland ) is a Swedish religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Stockholm .

Life

Arborelius, descendant of the Swedish Arborelius family from Arboga , comes from a family of architects. Born during a family trip to Switzerland, he grew up in Lund in the south of Sweden . His parents got divorced. He studied Modern Languages (English and German) at Lund University . At the age of 20 he converted from the Swedish Lutheran to the Catholic creed. When he was 22 years old, he entered the Carmelite monastery of Norraby in Tågarp , not far from Landskrona, and was active as a monk here between 1971 and 1998. He studied philosophy in Bruges and theology at the Pontifical Faculty Teresianum in Rome . Bishop Hubertus Brandenburg donated him to the priesthood on September 8, 1979 in Malmö .

On November 17, 1998, Arborelius was appointed by Pope John Paul II to be the first Swedish bishop of the Catholic diocese of Stockholm. He received his episcopal ordination on December 29, 1998, from his predecessor Hubertus Brandenburg; Co- consecrators were William Kenney CP , Auxiliary Bishop in Birmingham , and Alfons Nossol , Bishop of Opole . From 2005 to 2015 Arborelius was chairman of the Nordic Bishops' Conference .

From 2007 to 2016 he was Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of Sweden of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . Together with Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien, he was instrumental in the establishment of an independent Lieutenancy of the Order in Denmark with the investiture of Czeslaw Kozon , Bishop of Copenhagen, which in 2016 was merged into a Lieutenancy for Sweden and Denmark. In 2017 he was appointed Grand Cross Knight and Honorary Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of Sweden and Denmark.

In the consistory of June 28, 2017, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in the college of cardinals .

On December 23, 2017, the Pope appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity . On July 13, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Clergy for five years .

Act

In his work as a bishop in a diocese with believers from around 80 nations and in his publications, Arborelius refers to the fund of Carmelite spirituality as well as to Wilfrid Stinissen , Edith Stein , Johannes von Kreuz and Marie-Antoinette de Geuser.

Arborelius said in an interview in the summer of 2009 that he had informed the Vatican in November 2008 about the Holocaust denials of a bishop of the Schismatic Society of St. Pius X , Richard Williamson , who had been excommunicated by the Catholic Church . The former cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos contradicted this representation. To avoid a scandal - Pope Benedict XVI. had lifted Williamson's excommunication in January 2009 and, after international protests, declared that he had no knowledge of his Holocaust denial - Arborelius initially prevented the publication of the interview, but then agreed to it in September 2009.

Award

In December 2017, Anders Arborelius was the first and only cardinal in Sweden to be named Sweden of the Year by the Swedish magazine Fokus . The reason given for the award was his treatment of migrants .
