Antonio Maria Cagiano de Azevedo

Antonio Maria Cagiano de Azevedo (born December 14, 1797 in Santopadre , † January 13, 1867 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He was born as the elder of the two sons of Ottavio Cagiano de Azevedo and Mariangela Zagaroli. After studying at the Pontifical Academy for Ecclesiastical Nobles , which he began in 1817, he received his doctorate on July 22, 1819 as Doctor iuris utriusque . He was ordained a priest on August 10, 1824 and then worked in various positions at the Roman Curia . Pope Pius VIII appointed him House Prelate of His Holiness . He became governor of the city of Spoleto in late 1831 and president of the province of Perugia in 1833 . From 1836 to August 1837 he was vice- legate in Ferrara . When the Asian flu broke out in Rome in 1837, he was called there to put a stop to the epidemic. His measures were so successful that he was given a high position in the health administration of the Papal States. He was also rector of La Sapienza University .

On January 22, 1844, he was called to be Bishop of Senigallia . He was ordained bishop on February 11th of the same year in St. Peter's Basilica by Pope Gregory XVI. ; Co-consecrators were Cardinal Vicar Costantino Patrizi Naro and Cardinal Gabriele Ferretti , Prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Holy Relics .

In the consistory of January 22, 1844, Pope Gregory XVI created him cardinal priest . The Pope awarded him the cardinal's hat and the titular church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme on January 25 of the same year. Antonio Maria Cagiano de Azevedo took part in the conclave of 1846 , in which Pope Pius IX. was chosen. He resigned to his bishopric on July 18, 1848. In the summer of 1853 he became Prefect of the Council Congregation , which he remained until September 26, 1860. On June 23, 1854 he was raised to Cardinal Bishop of Frascati . From March 23, 1855 to 1856 he was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals . From September 28, 1860 he was a major cardinal penitentiary, a position he held until his death.

Antonio Maria Cagiano de Azevedo died on January 13, 1867 in Rome and was buried in his Roman titular church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme .

His nephew Ottavio Cagiano de Azevedo also became a cardinal in 1905.
