Fabrizio Sceberras Testaferrata ( Maltese Fabrizio Xeberras ; born April 1, 1757 in Valletta , Malta , † August 3, 1843 in Senigallia ) was the first Maltese cardinal of the Roman Church .

After being ordained a priest in 1802, he was named titular archbishop of Berytus on September 20 of the same year . He was ordained bishop on December 21, 1802 by Giuseppe Maria Cardinal Doria Pamphilj ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishops Benedetto Fenaja CM , Titular Archbishop of Philippi , and Francesco Bertazzoli , Titular Archbishop of Edessa in Macedonia .

He belonged to the papal diplomatic corps and was a member of the Roman curia . Testaferrata was nuncio in Switzerland from 1802 to 1816 and secretary of the Consistorial Congregation in 1815 .

Pope Pius VII created him cardinal in pectore on March 8, 1816 , which was published in July 1817, and appointed him Bishop of Senigallia on April 6, 1818 .

Testaferrata participated in the conclave of 1823 that Pope Leo XII. chose. He belonged to the pro-Austrian Zelanti group. He also took part in the conclave of 1829 , which Pope Pius VIII elected, and in the conclave of 1830/1831 , from which Gregory XVI. emerged as Pope.

Only on February 18, 2012, Prosper Grech OSA , a Maltese was again appointed cardinal of the Roman Church.
