Prosper Grech
Prosper Cardinal Grech OSA , COM (* December 24, 1925 in Vittoriosa , Malta as Stanley Grech ; † December 30, 2019 ) was a Roman Catholic religious and theologian .
Life
He joined the Augustinian order in 1943 and made his profession on October 8, 1944 . On 25 March 1950 he received in the Lateran Basilica , the ordination . In 1953 he was at the Pontifical Gregorian University after completing a dissertation on the subject of reconciliation and God. The main themes in modern English theology on Dr. theol. PhD . In 1954 he also obtained a licentiate in biblical studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute . From 1957 to 1958 he also studied Semitic Philology at Oxford University and from 1958 to 1959 at Cambridge University .
He was a professor of the Holy Scriptures at various Roman universities, especially the Pontifical Biblical Institute as well as at the Pontifical Lateran University and the Pontifical Gregorian University . He was the co-founder and first president of the Institute for Patristic at the Pontifical Patristic Institute Augustinianum . He has also collaborated with numerous dicasteries of the Roman Curia . He was a consultor to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and a member of the Pontifical Patristic Institute Augustinianum and the Pontifical Biblical Commission .
After the 21 January 2012 Titular Archbishop pro hac vice of San Leone was appointed, he donated Curia Archbishop Giuseppe Versaldi same year on February 8 in the Co-Cathedral of St. John in Valletta , the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were Paul Cremona OP , Archbishop of Malta , and Mario Grech , Bishop of Gozo . His motto In te Domine speravi ("In you, Lord, I have hoped") comes from the Te Deum or the Book of Psalms ( Ps 31.2 EU ).
In the solemn consistory of February 18, 2012, Benedict XVI took him. as cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Santa Maria Goretti in the college of cardinals . Prosper Grech was the first Maltese cardinal since Fabrizio Sceberras Testaferrata , who was accepted into the college of cardinals in 1816. On April 21, 2012, his title diakonia took possession.
At the beginning of the 2013 conclave , Cardinal Prosper Grech held the intended meditation for the electing cardinals in the Sistine Chapel.
