Antonio Maria Panebianco OFMConv (born August 13, 1808 in Terranova di Sicilia as Niccolò Panebianco , † November 21, 1885 in Rome ) was Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Panebianco joined the Order of the Minorites in 1823, took the religious name Antonio Maria and made profession in 1829 . He studied theology in Terranova and Rome and was ordained a priest . Then he was theology professor at the seminary of Catania. During the political turmoil in 1848 he fled to Malta. In 1853 he became Provincial of his Order in Sicily and in the same year Consultor of the Holy Office . Together with Cardinal Antonino De Luca , the Apostolic Nuncio in Austria, he traveled to Transylvania in 1858.

Pope Pius IX accepted him on September 27, 1861 as cardinal priest of San Girolamo degli Schiavoni to the college of cardinals . On December 23, 1861, Cardinal Panebianco changed the titular church to Santi XII Apostoli . From 1863 to 1867 he was prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Relics . On January 17, 1867 Pius IX appointed him. to the cardinal major penitentiary . From 1869 to 1870 he took part in the First Vatican Council . In 1872 he became treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals , which he stayed for a year. On October 15, 1877, Cardinal Panebianco resigned the post of Cardinal Grand Penitentiary and took part in the conclave of 1878 the next year , which Leo XIII. elected to the Pope. Leo XIII. appointed him on March 30, 1882 secretary of the Holy Office. On January 25, 1883 Panebianco resigned from office due to illness. He died two years later after a long illness and was buried in the Campo Verano Roman cemetery .
