San Girolamo dei Croati (degli Schiavoni) ( Latin: Sancti Hieronymi Croatarum ) is a Roman Catholic titular church and church of the Pontifical Croatian College of Saint Jerome in Rome and the national church of the Croats in Rome . It is also known under the old names San Girolamo degli Illirici and San Girolamo degli Schiavoni .

history

In the area, overlooking the port of Ripetta, settled early in the fourteenth century a community of refugees at the front of the Turks from Illyria and Slavonia had fled. In 1453 Pope Nicholas V granted the Breve Piis fidelium votis the establishment of the community of San Girolamo degli Schiavoni with a hospice and a hospital . The small chapel, originally Santa Marina de Posterula , which has existed since the eleventh century , was renamed after the church father Jerome , who was of Dalmatian descent.

In the following century Martino Longhi the Elder completely rebuilt the church with a bell tower and rich furnishings between 1588 and 1589 on behalf of Sixtus V. The marble for the facade was removed from the septizodium . He also founded a collegiate chapter there , which was expressly formed from priests with Slavic ancestors. He also wanted to transfer Jerome's relics from the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore there, but could not achieve his goal.

In 1683, the curia diplomat and polymath Stjepan Gradić , who came from Dubrovnik , was buried in San Girolamo.
