Luigi Maria Bilio (born March 25, 1826 in Alessandria , † January 30, 1884 in Rome ) was an Italian barnabit and curial cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Luigi Maria Bilio was born in Alessandria in Piedmont . He entered the Barnabite Order at the age of 14 and made his profession in Genoa in 1842 .

After his ordination in 1849 he was professor of Greek and philosophy at the Collegio Ducale in Parma and in Naples . He also taught philosophy, theology and canon law as a professor in Rome . He was also elected Deputy Superior General of his order. He worked as an advisor to the Congregation of the Holy Office from 1864 . He also played an important role in the preparation of the Syllabus errorum and the encyclical Quanta Cura of Pope Pius IX.

Bilio was born by Pope Pius IX. accepted into the College of Cardinals in the consistory of June 22, 1866 as Cardinal Priest of San Lorenzo in Panisperna . He participated in the First Vatican Council from 1869 to 1870.

On December 22nd, 1873 he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Sabina . He received his episcopal ordination from Pius IX. on January 12, 1874; Co-consecrators were Frédéric-François-Xavier Ghislain de Mérode , papal almsman , and Francesco Marinelli, sacristan of the Apostolic Palace . He was a participant in the conclave of 1878 , which Pope Leo XIII. chose.

Bilio served briefly from July 12 to December 20, 1876 as prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Relics and from December 20, 1876 as prefect of the Congregation of Rites . From October 18, 1877 he was a cardinal major penitentiary , which he held until his death. In 1883 Cardinal Bilio was also appointed secretary of the Holy Office .

Luigi Bilio died in Rome in January 1884 at the age of 57 and was buried in the Campo Verano cemetery.
