Pietro Gianelli

Pietro Gia (n) nelli (born August 11, 1807 in Terni , Italy , † November 5, 1881 in Rome ) was an Italian theologian and curial cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Gianelli studied philosophy, theology as well as civil and canon law at the University of Perugia in Terni and at the University of La Sapienza in Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1831 and then received the title of Papal House Prelate. Eventually he became an auditor at the Apostolic Chamber . In 1851 he became auditor of the Nunciature in Naples, from 1852 to 1853 he held the same office at the Nunciature in France.

After a time as an auditor of the Roman Rota from 1852, Pope Pius IX appointed him . in March 1858 to Nuncio in Naples and the month after to titular Archbishop of Sardis . He received his episcopal ordination on June 6, 1858, Cardinal Costantino Patrizi Naro ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Antonio Ligi-Bussi and Bishop Giuseppe Cardoni . In 1861 he became pro-secretary of the Council Congregation and its secretary in March 1868, which he remained until 1875. There he became a close confidante of the Cardinal Prefect Prospero Caterini , whose conservative positions and attitudes he shared. He was involved in the preparation of the First Vatican Council , in which he participated from 1869 to 1870. He was a supporter of the papal infallibility dogma .

In the consistory of March 15, 1875 Pius IX took. him as cardinal priest of Sant'Agnese fuori le mura to the college of cardinals . In 1877 he became president of the Pontifical Council for Public Affairs . After the death of the Pope, Cardinal Gianelli took part in the conclave of 1878 , which Leo XIII. when Pope voted.

Three years later, at the age of 74, he died in Rome and was buried in the Campo Verano cemetery.
