Dolmen des Erves
The Dolmen des Erves is located near the Erve (river), about three kilometers north of Sainte-Suzanne, west of Le Mans in the Mayenne department (53) in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).
The "Dolmen à couloir" consists of a single large room, which is reached through a retracted and lowered entrance (Angevin type). A two-tier cairn covered the entire structure. The inside of the rectangular chamber is about four by three meters and consists of two huge cap stones that rest on five large bearing stones. The western capstone measures about three by three meters and rests as a three-point support on two side stones and the large end stone. The eastern capstone is over three by two meters and rests on two side stones (see yoke ) and leans against the western one. A pair of bearing stones has been preserved from what was once a long corridor. The gaps between all bearing stones were made of dry masonry .
The dolmen is dated to around 4000 BC. Dated.
A hundred years ago, three more dolmens and a menhir are said to have stood within sight of the chamber .
