Francesco Alciati
Francesco Alciati (born February 2, 1522 in Milan , † April 20, 1580 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Catholic Church . Alciati was a relative, but not nephew, as can sometimes be read, of the humanist Andrea Alciati and was his heir and successor at the University of Pavia from 1550 to 1560.
He studied in Bologna, where he also heard from Ugo Boncompagni , who was appointed cardinal at the same time, and after graduating in both rights he went to Pavia, where he continued his education with Andrea Alciato . His fellow students included Reginald Pole , Alessandro Farnese , Cristoforo Madruzzo and Otto Truchseß von Waldburg . In Pavia Alciati maintained friendly relations with Girolamo Cardano , for whose appointment to Bologna in 1562 he campaigned and who dedicated various writings to him and appointed the cardinal as executor. In Pavia Alciati taught Carlo Borromeo in law and was one of his closest associates. Alciati was a member of the Roman Curia . Pope Pius IV appointed him cardinal of the titular church of Santa Susanna on March 12, 1565 . His tomb is in the Roman church of Santa Maria degli Angeli .
