Fulvio Astalli
Fulvio Astalli (born July 29, 1655 in Sambuci , † January 14, 1721 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal and bishop .
Life
As a member of a noble family from Latium, he was nephew of the cardinals Francesco Maidalchini and Camillo Astalli-Pamphili . He began his career as a chamber cleric in the Apostolic Chamber under Pope Clement X , to whom he was distantly related, and became prefect of the papal militia under Pope Innocent XI.
On September 2, 1686 he was by Pope Innocent XI. elevated to cardinalate and then cardinal deacon of San Giorgio in Velabro . He received a dispensation because he had not yet received minor orders and had a relative in the college of cardinals. On May 17, 1688 he moved to Santa Maria in Cosmedin and on October 19, 1689 to Santi Cosma e Damiano . From September 24, 1693 to May 16, 1696 he was Prefect of the Apostolic Signature and was in the same year by Pope Innocent XII. appointed papal legate for Urbino . From 1698 to 1709 he was papal legate for Ferrara . After the death of Innocent XII. Cardinal Astalli was one of the spokesmen for the Spanish parliamentary group in the College of Cardinals. In Ferrara he had difficult negotiations with France and the Austrian Habsburgs, who had violated the neutrality of the Papal States in the War of the Spanish Succession . Both sides accused Astalli of supporting the other army.
On February 19, 1710 he became cardinal priest of Santi Quirico e Giulitta and on May 7, 1710 of San Pietro in Vincoli . On April 16, 1714 he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Sabina and on May 13, 1714 Pope Clement XI donated him . with the assistance of the Cardinals Ferdinando d'Adda and Lorenzo Corsini the episcopal ordination . On April 26, 1719, he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri , Dean of the Holy College and Governor of Velletri . From 1720 he was Cardinal Astalli responsible for the to be opened trial against Cardinal Giulio Alberoni , who through the conspiracy of Cellamare the Spanish King Philip V to the guardian of Louis XV. wanted to rise from France. However, Fulvio Astalli died before a possible trial could begin.
In 1703 he became a member of the Accademia dell'Arcadia under the name Alasto Liconeo. Among the poems published by the academy are three sonnets by Astallis, one of them on Prince Eugene .
He died on January 14, 1721 in Rome and was buried in Santa Maria in Ara Coeli .
