Gaspare Carpegna
Gaspare Carpegna (also Gasparo Carpegna ; * May 8, 1625 in Rome ; † April 6, 1714 ibid) was an Italian clergyman, bishop and cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Origin and early years
He came from the family of the Counts of Carpegna and was the son of Francesco Maria Carpegna and his wife Marzia Spada. He was related to Cardinal Ulderico Carpegna , who came from another branch of the family. His sister Virginia Carpegna married Antonio Altieri, a nephew of Pope Clement X. Gaspare Carpegna studied law and was awarded a Doctor iuris utriusque doctorate . He entered the service of the Roman Curia and received the abbey of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Marsi in commendam .
Church career
Gaspare Carpegna was ordained a priest and became a trainee lawyer at the Courts of Justice of the Apostolic Signature . On May 5, 1658 he was appointed canon of the Vatican Basilica , later he became secretary of the Congregation for the Water. On December 10, 1664 he became an auditor of the Roman Rota . During the pontificate of Clement X, he was Consultor of the Congregation for the Roman and General Inquisitions and Datar of His Holiness .
Clement X appointed him titular Archbishop of Nicaea on June 16, 1670 , as Curia Bishop he kept his offices at the Rota and in the Apostolic Datarie. He received his episcopal ordination on June 22, 1670 in the Roman church of San Silvestro in Capite Cardinal Paluzzo Paluzzi Altieri degli Albertoni , Archbishop of Ravenna ; Co- consecrators were Stefano Ugolini , Latin Patriarch of Constantinople , and Francesco Marini , Bishop of Molfetta . In July 1670 Gaspare Carpegna became papal assistant to the throne .
Cardinal office and death
In the consistory of December 22nd, 1670 Clement X. Gaspare elevated Carpegna to cardinal priest . Gaspare Carpegna was a participant in the 1676 conclave that Pope Innocent XI. chose. From 1676 until his death he was Prefect of the Congregation for Ecclesiastical Immunity . In addition, he was from January 13, 1681 to January 12, 1682 chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . He took part in the 1689 conclave , which elected Alexander VIII as pope, and in the 1691 conclave , which led to the election of Innocent XII as pope . ended. On October 19, 1689, he had opted for the titular church of Santa Maria in Trastevere , and on January 27, 1698, he rose to the cardinal class of cardinal bishops and received the suburbicarian diocese of Sabina . From July 1700 until his death he was Prefect of the Congregation for the Residence of Bishops.
He died on April 6, 1714 at 3 a.m. in his Roman palazzo . He was buried in a family grave in the church of Santa Maria in Vallicella .
