Gaspare Carpegna (also Gasparo Carpegna ; * May 8, 1625 in Rome ; † April 6, 1714 ibid) was an Italian clergyman, bishop and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Origin and early years

He came from the family of the Counts of Carpegna and was the son of Francesco Maria Carpegna and his wife Marzia Spada. He was related to Cardinal Ulderico Carpegna , who came from another branch of the family. His sister Virginia Carpegna married Antonio Altieri, a nephew of Pope Clement X. Gaspare Carpegna studied law and was awarded a Doctor iuris utriusque doctorate . He entered the service of the Roman Curia and received the abbey of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Marsi in commendam .

Church career

Gaspare Carpegna was ordained a priest and became a trainee lawyer at the Courts of Justice of the Apostolic Signature . On May 5, 1658 he was appointed canon of the Vatican Basilica , later he became secretary of the Congregation for the Water. On December 10, 1664 he became an auditor of the Roman Rota . During the pontificate of Clement X, he was Consultor of the Congregation for the Roman and General Inquisitions and Datar of His Holiness .

Clement X appointed him titular Archbishop of Nicaea on June 16, 1670 , as Curia Bishop he kept his offices at the Rota and in the Apostolic Datarie. Cardinal office and death
