Camillo Astalli , also Camillo Astalli-Pamphilj , (born October 21, 1616 or 1619 in Rome , † December 21, 1663 in Catania ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Astalli studied law in Rome. His brother, a margrave, married the niece of a future rival at the papal court, Olimpia Maidalchini . His patron in the Vatican was Giovanni Giacomo Panciroli . Astalli was created cardinal by Pope Innocent X on September 19, 1650 and installed as cardinal priest of San Pietro in Montorio on October 17, 1650 . He also became a cardinal depositary because his predecessor in office, Camillo Pamphilj , married and the other predecessor in office, Francesco Maidalchini , had fallen out of favor with the Pope.

When his mentor Panciroli died in 1651, he worried about his future in the Vatican and joined the Spanish group around Philip IV of Spain . In February 1654 he was dismissed by Pope Innocent X and removed from office for treason against state secrets in Spain. Only after the death of Pope Innocent X did he regain influence in the Vatican. Astalli took part in the 1655 conclave , from which Alexander VII emerged as pope. On January 24, 1661, he was elected by the cardinals for one year as chamberlain of the College of Cardinals , and on July 4, 1661 he was appointed Bishop of Catania with the personal title of Archbishop . He was ordained bishop on July 25, 1661 in the Church of San Giacomo in Rome by Cardinal Federico Sforza ; Co- consecrators were Emilio Altieri , Bishop of Camerino , and Alessandro Crescenzi , Bishop of Bitonto .

Camillo Astalli died in Catania and was buried in the cathedral there.
