René Rapin (* 1621 in Tours , † October 27, 1687 in Paris ) was a French Jesuit and philologist .

Life

Rapin entered the Jesuit order in 1639. He taught classical literature and rhetoric at Jesuit schools , wrote poetic and literary theoretical works, and maintained an exchange of letters with the French general and memoir writer Roger de Bussy-Rabutin .

In the Jesuit order he held the office of scriptor librorum . In this function he wrote religious and religious-historical treatises. Since 1656 he dealt with Jansenism . To research this religious trend, he traveled to Flanders to research Cornelius Jansen , the founder. In 1668 he also traveled to Rome for research, where he was supported by Pope Clement XI. Received inspection of files. The result of his studies was a two-volume work entitled "Histoire du Jansénisme" and "Mémoires sur l'eglise et la societé, la cour, la Ville et le Jansénisme", which he was able to complete shortly before his death, but not until 1861 and was printed in 1865. The second volume contains a detailed description of the literary salons of the time and the noble society at the king's court and on their country estates.

His most successful work, however, was the garden poem, which was accompanied by a lengthy prose tract, which was translated into several languages and for the first time comprehensively laid down the theory of the French baroque garden in writing.

Rapin often stayed at the country estate of Guillaume de Lamoigon , President of Parliament in Paris and a long-time friend and supporter of the Jesuit. Here he suffered a stroke in 1687, the consequences of which he died a little later, brought to Paris.
