Life

Wimmer is the son of an artist couple. He studied from 1977 to 1982 at the Technical University of Berlin , received his doctorate under Dieter Hennebo at the University of Hanover in 1984 and completed his habilitation in 2001 at the Technical University of Berlin in the field of garden monument maintenance .

He has been working as a freelancer since 1984 . He has been working in the library of the German Horticultural Association since 1990 on a voluntary basis.

Wimmer combines the traditional, art-historically oriented garden historiography with personal history and especially with the history of plants as the main elements of the garden. He made the history of the introduction, distribution and use of plants a focus of his work. In recent years he has devoted himself increasingly to the history of practical horticulture, working techniques and gardening tools.

Wimmer drafted numerous reports and plans for historic gardens like the palace garden of Charlottenburg , the Schloss Bellevue Park , the Schwetzingen Castle Park , the castle park Rheinberg , the Greizer Park , the Castle Park Schönhausen , the palace gardens Koenigs Wusterhausen , the Berlin Lustgarten , the Gutspark Alt Madlitz , the Gutspark Meseberg and the Mathildenhof Winery Park in Nierstein .

Another focus of his work is the bibliography and history of horticultural publications. In the library of the German Horticultural Association, the largest horticultural specialist library in the German-speaking area, he is involved in expanding the holdings.

In his designs, he prefers a fixed structural shape that is in dialogue with variable planting. He attaches particular importance to working with the existing inventory and material. In the preservation of garden monuments, he stands for the thoroughness of research and the greatest possible preservation of the stock, but rejects dogmatic approaches and advocates individual solutions tailored to the respective case.

His oil paintings mostly show elementary landscapes in the state before human intervention or those that have been abandoned by humans and are to be understood as a form of criticism of civilization. He is particularly interested in the abstract play of shapes and colors of rock, water and clouds. His representation technique ties in with the late Romanticism. However, he avoids idyllic.
