The vines have been cultivated according to the guidelines of controlled ecological viticulture for about 30 years. The Heyl zu Herrnsheim winery and its manager at the time, Peter W. von Weymarn, are counted among the pioneers in German organic viticulture .

particularities

During the vineyard reform of the German Wine Law in 1971, the then estate manager Peter von Weymarn managed, after extensive bureaucracy, that the monopoly Niersteiner Brudersberg could be preserved. The location is only 1.2 hectares and is a special feature on the Rote Hang in Nierstein. The decisive factors are a special microclimate and the orientation of the vineyard to the south. Wines from the Niersteiner Brudersberg are valued worldwide for their uniqueness.

Due to the merger of the two wineries Freiherr Heyl zu Herrnsheim and Weingut St. Antony, both wineries are housed in one building. For reasons of wine law, the addition “Weingut” on the label for the Heyl zu Herrnsheim winery has been omitted since the 2008 vintage. The St. Antony Weingut GmbH & Co. KG acts as the bottler.

Both wineries moved to the site of the former Gustav Adolf Schmitt winery in 2007 and are located under one roof. Dirk Würtz has been managing the wineries as a partner and cellar master since 2019.

History of the property

The history of the estate itself dates back to 1561. The estate probably goes back to an early monastery complex. Conrad Breder von Hohenstein (1574–1589), who can be considered the first owner of the estate, had been mayor of the knight's court in Nierstein since 1574, his coat of arms and the year 1574 adorn the cellar under the left, historical wing of today's two-winged building from 1860 The Lauteren family from Mainz came into possession of the estate in the 19th century. The Lauteren family earned their money not only from the wine trade, but also from producing sparkling wine using traditional methods. In 1909 the estate came into the possession of Baron Cornelius von Heyl , whose son named it "Mathildenhof" after his wife. In 1969 it came into the possession of Isa von Weymarn (née von Meding ), who ran it with her husband Peter von Weymarn until 1997. Between 1997 and 2006 Carsten Ahr managed the winery, which still owns the Mathildenhof today (2015). In the years from 2005 to 2018, both wineries were managed separately by the Geisenheim oenologist Felix Peters.

Label "monk"

The label with the monk is typical of the winery, it was first used in 1890. It was designed by Joseph Sattler , a renowned graphic artist and at the time a professor at the Strasbourg Art Academy, based on the monastic winemaking tradition in Worms (Liebfrauenstift).
