Joseph Kaspar Sattler (born July 20, 1867 in Schrobenhausen ; † May 12, 1931 in Munich ) was a painter, bookplate artist and illustrator in the Art Nouveau style.

Life

He was mainly known as an Art Nouveau artist for his ex-libris and illustrations a. a. known for Pan magazine . After an apprenticeship as a painter and gilder with his father in Landshut, he studied at the Munich Art Academy and settled in Munich as a freelance artist. Various illustrations, ex-libris, posters and works for the Reichsdruckerei led him a. a. to Strasbourg (école des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg) and Berlin. Among other things, he also designed the font “Nibelung Script” in 1897, which was used for his monumental work “The Nibelungs”, which Germany showed at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris . Only 200 copies of this were printed. In 1917 Sattler was appointed professor in Strasbourg. He is considered to be one of the leading pioneers of Art Nouveau.
