Title church Santi Quirico e Giulitta

The title of cardinal priest of Santi Quirico e Giulitta was recreated by Pope Sixtus V on April 13, 1587 with the Apostolic Constitution "Religiosa" at the Roman church of the same name, Santi Quirico e Giulitta . He thus transferred the title of San Ciriaco alle Terme Diocleziane , which had probably existed since 499 , since the associated church had been abandoned since the 1490s.

The title received the previous title holder of San Ciriaco alle Terme, Alessandro Ottaviano de 'Medici , who opted for the title Santi Giovanni e Paolo in 1591 . The current title holder is Seán Brady , who took possession of his titular church on April 23, 2017.

history

Pope Sixtus had already in December 1586 with the Apostolic Constitution "Postquam verus". the College of Cardinals was fundamentally reformed after this topic had been heatedly discussed at the Council of Trent but remained unsolved. He set the maximum number of cardinals at 70, the number of elders in Israel in the Old Testament. This determination remained binding until 1963.

The constitution “Religiosa”, passed on April 13, 1587, gave Sixtus concrete form of the regulations and also reorganized the title dioceses, churches and diaconies. In particular, the titles were abolished whose church buildings were no longer used as such or had become "ruins". The latter also included the titular churches of Alessandro de 'Medici, for whom the title was now transferred to the church of Santi Quirico e Giulitta, which had a similar name and was renovated only a few years earlier.
