Filippo Antonio Gualterio (born March 24, 1660 in Fermo , † April 21, 1728 in Rome ; also Filippo Antonio Gualteri ) was a papal diplomat, bishop and cardinal .

Life

Filippo Antonio Gualterio, son of a noble family from Orvieto , studied in Fermo and was governor of various Italian cities from 1685. In 1687 he was also appointed to the Apostolic Signature . Pope Innocent XII. appointed him deputy delegate in Avignon in 1696 , which he remained until July 1700.

After his ordination, Innocent XII appointed him. on March 30, 1700 titular Archbishop of Athenae . The episcopal ordination donated him on May 16 of the same year François de Maily , Archbishop of Arles . Gualterio had already been appointed nuncio in France in April 1700 . On November 27, 1701 Pope Clement XI appointed him . to the Bishop of Imola , where he was allowed to use the personal title of Archbishop .

In the consistory of May 17, 1706, Clemens XI took him. as Cardinal Priest of San Crisogono to the College of Cardinals and appointed him Protector of Scotland in the same year. Cardinal Gualterio also became papal legate in Romagna. In 1709 he became Bishop of Todi . He held this post until 1714, when he resigned and was succeeded by his brother Ludovico Anselmo Gualterio . Protector of England since 1711, the cardinal entered into diplomatic relations with the Jacobean pretender to the throne, James III. Gualterio took part in the conclave of 1721 , the Innocent XIII. chose, as well as at the conclave of 1724 , in which Benedict XIII. was chosen. He assigned him the titular church of Santa Cecilia in 1725 and the church of Santa Prassede in 1726 . Cardinal Gualterio died in 1728 and was later buried in Orvieto Cathedral.
