The Große Eulenpfütz is a street in Trier in the Mitte district . It runs between Dominikanerstrasse and Mustorstrasse. It forks about halfway down the road. The left fork bears the name “ Kleine Eulenpfütz ”.
history
The street is named after a fountain from which owls drew water that was once depicted on a house facade. "Pfütz" is an old German word for well. The name and image were taken from a reinterpretation of "Hegilputz" around 1290.
The name "Eulengaß" appeared for the first time in 1657. Only in 1863 was a distinction made between large and small owl puddles.
Cultural monuments
The street is characterized by various historical cultural monuments . In the street there are also some buildings of the ecclesiastical curia.
The eponymous building was adorned with the fountain image until the 19th century. Today nothing can be seen of the picture. The house "Zur Eule", house number 9, refers to the former building.
