Niccolò Albergati-Ludovisi (born September 15, 1608 in Bologna , † August 9, 1687 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church and Archbishop of Bologna .

Life

Origin and early years

Niccolò Albergati, its original name, came from a Bolognese patrician family . He entered the clergy on March 4, 1622 and received the abbey that his brother Fabio had previously held. According to a single source, he was believed to have been a member of the Society of Jesus. In 1631 he was called to Rome by his cousin, Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi . Niccolò Ludovisi, son of Count Orazio Ludovisi, brother of Pope Gregory XV. and also Albergati's cousin, declared him his brother and stipulated that Albergati had to carry the Ludovisi family coat of arms and their name together with his own. In Rome, Niccolò Albergati-Ludovisi was the papal house prelate and vicar of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Damaso . 1635 he became pastor of the Cathedral of Bologna . Under the pontificate of Urban VIII he was a trainee lawyer at the tribunals of the Apostolic Signature , but in 1637 he renounced this in favor of his brother Antonio.

Church career

On February 6, 1645 he was appointed Archbishop of Bologna. From February 21, 1650 he was a cardinal major penitentiary until his death . On December 11, 1651, he was no longer Archbishop of Bologna. On October 11, 1666, he moved to the titular church of Santa Maria in Trastevere . From 1658 to 1659 he was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals . On October 19, 1676, the Pope appointed him cardinal priest of San Lorenzo in Lucina . On September 13, 1677 Pope Innocent XI raised him . the Cardinal Bishop of Sabina and on 1 December 1681 by Porto and Santa Rufina . On February 15, 1683, Albergati-Ludovisi was appointed Cardinal Dean and Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri and Governor of Velletri .

He died after a long and serious illness in Rome and was buried there in his former titular church, Santa Maria in Trastevere .
