Giulio Gabrielli the Elder
Giulio Gabrielli (born January 6, 1603 in Rome ; † August 31, 1677 there ) was an Italian bishop and cardinal.
biography
He was born in Rome as the son of an old royal family , originally from Gubbio , who moved to Rome at the end of the 14th century. He was the son of Antonio Gabrielli and Prudenzia Lancellotti, nephew of Cardinal Orazio Lancellotti, direct cousin of Pope Clement X and uncle of the poet from the Accademia dell'Arcadia Prudenza Gabrielli Capizucchi.
From a very young age he was a cleric in the Apostolic Chamber and later became its dean. He was a trainee lawyer at the Apostolic Signature .
Pope Urban VIII elevated him to the rank of cardinal in the consistory on December 16, 1641, and gave him the diaconia of Santa Maria Nuova and the apostolic delegation of Urbino, which also included Gubbio, his family's country of origin. Shortly afterwards, on February 10, 1642, he was appointed Bishop of Ascoli Piceno .
He held the office of cardinal protodiac and later that of cardinal proto priest and attained the position of cardinal-bishop of Sabina (1668).
In October 1670 he was made cardinal in Romagna , governor of Fermo and governor of Capranica .
He died of malaria on August 31, 1677 and was buried in Rome , in Santa Maria sopra Minerva .
A bust of him is now in the Museum of Rome in the Palazzo Braschi and is considered the work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini , but is also attributed by art historians to his pupil Giuseppe Mazzuoli.
A relative of his, Giulio Gabrielli, called il giovane , also became a cardinal in 1801 and held the office of foreign minister.
