Coat of arms of the Ceva

He was a member of the house of the Marchesi di Ceva. As the son of Marchese Garzilasco Ceva, he was baptized Hadriano , or more simply: Adriano . The name Francesco was added later or was not recorded due to an error in the records of the time.

biography

As a young man he went to Rome, where he became a prelate in the service of Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, who was later elected Pope under the name Urban VIII . He served as secretary in the Barberini legation in France. It appears that he was also one of the proponents of Barberini's ascension to the papal throne.

After his election, Urban VIII continued to appoint Ceva as prelate until he was called to France as extraordinary apostolic nuncio .

Ceva was promoted to cardinal in 1643, with the cardinal title of Santa Prisca . With the Pope's death the following year, Ceva took part in the conclave of 1644, which elected Pope Innocent X and again in 1655, Pope Alexander VII .

He died of a form of gout a few months after the conclave , on October 12, 1655 . He is buried in the baptistery of the Basilica of St. John Lateran , in Rome.
