Giovanni Stefano Donghi

Giovanni Stefano Donghi (* 1608 in Genoa ; † November 26, 1669 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal and bishop.

Life

Giovanni Stefano Donghi comes from a noble family of the Republic of Genoa . His father was Bartolomeo Donghi and his mother Giacoma Bernardi. Both originally came from Voltri and were aristocrats from birth, although they did not join the Genoese nobility until 1581.

He began his ecclesiastical career by visiting the universities of Bologna and Salamanca , where he was appointed Apostolic Protonotary from June 15, 1635 . He entered the circle of the Roman Curia and became prefect of the Annona and trainee lawyer for the Apostolic Signature as well as for Grace and Justice. In 1638 he was appointed President of the Apostolic Chamber and the Apostolic Chamber of Clerics. As vicar of Cardinal Antonio Barberini , who could not live there because he had taken on other pastoral duties, he was appointed commissario residente of three legazioni .

On July 14, 1643 he was appointed cardinal deacon in the consistory and on August 31 of the same year received the deaconry of San Giorgio in Velabro . On July 17 of the same year he was confirmed as Prefect of Annona and, in the name of His Holiness, appointed Plenipotentiary Minister of War in Italy, where he succeeded, among other things, in achieving peace with the German princes. As a nominated legate in Ferrara (1644-1648) he took part in the conclave of 1644 , at which Pope Innocent X was elected. He was appointed governor of the Legazione di Romagna; from 1651 to 1654 he was papal legate there .

His election as Bishop of Ajaccio took place on November 27, 1651. He took part in the conclave of 1655 , from which Alexander VII emerged as Pope. After this conclave, he decided on May 14, 1655 for the Diakonie of Sant'Agata dei Goti . He later left the Episcopal See of Vigevano in favor of the Episcopal See of Imola (August 2, 1655). On February 26, 1663 there was a transfer to the bishopric of Ferrara . In 1667 he again took part in the conclave that resulted in the election of Pope Clement IX. flowed.

In the last years of his life he was a cardinal protodeacon . He died in Rome on November 26, 1669 at around 11 p.m. and was buried in the Madonna Chapel of the Santissimo Nome di Gesù church in Rome.
